Gris1
Gris1 (born in 1971 in Romans‑sur‑Isère) is a French artist with roots in graffiti and a founding member of the DMV crew (Da Mental Vaporz). Active since the 1990s, he has developed a visual language that hybridises lettering, geometric motifs, miniaturised urban landscapes and signs drawn from digital culture. His canvases and murals are characterised by dense compositions, saturated colours, layered flat planes and a weave of minute details (trains, buildings, signage) that form living ‘image-cities’. Lettering remains a cornerstone, without precluding a narrative and cartographic dimension.
Having moved from trains and walls to the studio, he channels the energy of the graffiti movement into complex pictorial schemes, playing with scale and axonometric perspectives. In galleries and institutions he presents modular series, installations and painted volumes, while continuing to undertake monumental interventions at festivals and through public commissions in France and abroad. DMV’s group exhibitions have helped to legitimise an exacting strand of graffiti writing, combining technical virtuosity with experimentation.
What sets Gris1 apart is the interplay between decorative immersion and a critical reading of the contemporary city: mapping its flows, its visual clutter and its mobility. His work, at once accessible and sophisticated, draws together graffiti culture, graphic design and contemporary urban imagery.
